My New Personal Website and this Substack Newsletter
March 2021 my new website went live, let me explain the thinking behind it all.
Hi everyone,
As you can see from my previous post, which was almost exactly a year ago, this all has been a while in the making.
Medium’s Been Great, but I Shouldn’t Rely Solely on It
I decided last year that having all the technology and web development content I’ve poured hours of time and learning into living almost exclusively on Medium probably wasn’t the best strategy I could have.
Yes, Medium has been great for reaching a decent amount of people, growing a following, and even garnering opportunities to write technical articles for other tech companies or speak on tech-focused podcasts, however, if Medium disappeared tomorrow, I’d be totally out of luck.
So I Built my Own Website & Made this Free Newsletter
Which is why I undertook building my own website.
And in addition to a personal website where I can keep track of the content I’ve done in all its various forms (articles, podcasts, tech talks & tech company articles, etc.), I started this newsletter.
I chose Substack instead of any number of competitors because no matter how many subscribers I grow to (and I hope to be a useful resource for many), Substack will not charge me to send emails as long as I don’t charge my subscribers to view my content (which I don’t ever intend to do).
And because I’m not using my website to make money, I don’t particularly want to pay a newsletter company every month to let my subscribers know I’ve written new content they might find useful. Hence, Substack.
Because Everyone Should Be Able to See my Content
I want my content to be available to anyone and everyone. The openness of the web development community is one of things I love most about it, and I’ve gained so much from it myself, that I want to give back to help others. So here I am.
Currently, all my content still lives on Medium, but over time, I aim to move that content over to my site. In the end, it will probably live in both places, but I’ll rest easier knowing that I have a copy of it on my site as well.
Like what you see and hear? Consider subscribing to my newsletter
Each month I’ll send a (shorter) newsletter update letting you know what I’ve been up to that month. I can guarantee you at least one new tech focused article, and I may also include links to talks I’ve given or other web development stuff I’ve been working on that you might find useful.
No spam. No cost to you. No risk. Unsubscribe at any time.
