May 2021: Join me for a React Live Stream June 2nd & CSS Animations
Frontend is my jam: so a newsletter of React & CSS makes my heart happy.
Hey all,
Before I dive into the meat of this newsletter, I wanted to let you know I’ll be doing a free live stream on the React Wednesdays Twitch show at 11am EST! 🥳
Join me on the React Wednesdays All Day Edition, June 2nd at 11am EST
I was on React Wednesdays previously talking about developing in large React apps, and the hosts were kind enough to invite me back again.
And this time, I’m joined by other React legends like Kent C. Dodds, Ryan Florence, Jason Lengstorf and more, all giving amazing talks throughout the day.
This time I’m tackling: Modernizing Enterprise React Apps. It’s a challenge lots of developers face but there’s not a lot of good content out there about how to build apps and keep them running for years.
I’m excited to share what I’ve learned over time building large, complex React apps just like this for my job.
If you’d like to make sure you don’t miss it (June 2nd, 11am EST) - you can register here. Did I mention it’s free?
But enough about me, let’s get to the code.
If CSS is your thing, I wrote a new article about Animating a Mobile Menu Bar with CSS and a Touch of JavaScript.
You can see this in action on my personal site, if you visit it on your mobile phone.
In this article I share how I used vanilla CSS to create a mobile hamburger navigation, then used native CSS animations to flip it into an “X” when a user opens the nav (and smoothly slide nav links into view), and then transform it back into a hamburger icon when the navigation screen is closed again.
It was fun getting that animation just right. I bet you could find your own use case for it too.
Here’s a preview of the finished product.
And last but not least - I moved another blog post over to my site.
This article is all about what GraphQL really is.
If you’ve heard about GraphQL but still aren’t totally sure what it is, how it’s different from REST APIs, etc. This article is for you. I give a crash course on what it’s about, how it works, and pros and cons to help get up to speed quickly.
I hope you found something useful in this letter. Please share with your friends if you did.
See you next month in June, and have a great day!
Paige
